Kayla’s Knee Instability Patient Story

Posted on: January 2nd, 2024 by Our Team

Kayla came to us last year with pain and instability in both patellas while playing soccer. Due to the severity of her instability and frequent patellar dislocations, it was recommended she undergo a MPFL (medial patellafemoral ligament) reconstruction.

Kayla was seen before her surgery and was one of the hardest workers in the clinic. Kayla could be seen lifting and pushing very heavy weights but continued to have patellar instability with higher level activities required for sports. After surgery Kayla was determined to return stronger than ever, she embarked on her post op physical therapy program under the guidance of the California Physical Therapy team. Kayla’s PT program was dramatically regressed after surgery to focus on range of motion, blood flow restriction, manual therapy, and muscle reeducation. Her program then focused on walking normally again and weaning from crutches.

With much time and dedication, Kayla slow and steady returned to higher level activity to be able to play sports again! Kayla was always a hard worker before and after surgery and only complained a little when she had to work on running endurance. We are so proud of all her hard work and can’t wait to see her back on the soccer field!
